Powys group leaders
In partnership with Powys County Council, and Sports Council for Wales, (Now Sport Wales) the Run Your Life project is setting up a number of fun, non competitive social running groups in Powys to encourage women to improve their health, fitness, confidence and social networks. Aimed at the absolute beginner, these groups will also suit anyone who has recently started running, or is returning to running after a long break, and who wishes to build up confidence and/or stamina before moving on to a local running club. Some of the groups may be attached to local running clubs, but the focus of the Run Your Life groups is to support women to complete a gentle walk/run programme in a fun, social, non competitive atmosphere.
Run Your Life Leaders.
Each group will be led by two or more volunteers who are qualified and licensed UK Athletics Running Fitness coaches. They will be as varied as their members, being of all ages, paces, shapes, sizes and levels of experience. Many of them have themselves started as complete beginners in recent years and can remember what it is like starting out. What they all have in common is that they enjoy supporting other women to achieve their goals, value the individual and want to provide a supportive relaxed environment in which women can enjoy building their health and fitness through running.
“I started running about 18 months ago to lose weight and get fit, having done no exercise for almost 20 years! I found by joining in a walk/run group that my confidence and ability soon soared and spurred me on to undertake other activities and exercise. I enjoy the social aspect most, having a good natter and have met and remained friends with many people whom I would never have met otherwise.”
“I have only been running for 6 months and know how difficult it can be to make it to the first session. I now run twice a week and am improving my distances. Our group is friendly and supportive of people of all abilities. I have gained confidence, lost weight and now have more energy!”
Run Your Life sessions
The sessions will use walking and gentle running carried out at conversation pace. They will focus on enjoyment and mutual support. They will start with walking and then slowly build up the amount of running time. Everyone will be supported to go at their own pace and to chat to others in the group as they go along.
